Product description: heavy uniform loden (navy blue) “Electoral Palatinate around 1760”
A heavy loden in deep navy blue, woven in a classic plain weave with a loden finish. The fabric weighs 850 g per running metre (approx. 567 g/m²), is made of 100% new wool (merino) and has a width of 150 cm. The dense, matte surface and the loden finish provide excellent weather resistance, dimensional stability and an authentic historical appearance.
Historical background and origin
In early 2025 a customer approached us with a historical drawing: a uniform depiction of an infantryman from the Electoral Palatinate dated 1760/1761, a copy of original plate 60 from Becher: Wahrhaftige Nachrichten. From this template we had the fabric produced as closely as possible to the historical original in colour, weight and weave. The aim was to create a material that matches authentic reenactment uniforms both visually and to the touch.
Characteristics and applications
- Appearance — Deep, dark navy blue; matte, even look.
- Hand — Heavy, dense, with the characteristic loden feel.
- Function — Wind‑ and water‑repellent thanks to the loden finish; very good insulating properties.
- Use — Ideal for historical uniforms, coats, cloaks and high‑quality reenactment projects.
Why this fabric matters for your reenactment
Authenticity starts with the material: colour, weight and weave shape the appearance of a historical uniform more than many tailoring details. This loden was produced specifically from a contemporary source so that uniforms not only look correct but also feel like they did in the 18th century. For museums, film clients and reenactment groups this makes a decisive difference.
Care instructions and sewing recommendations
- Cleaning — Dry cleaning recommended; treat local stains with lukewarm water and wool detergent.
- Sewability — Use sturdy needles and stronger threads due to the weight; lay out before cutting and, if necessary, steam lightly.
- Storage — Store cool, dry and protected from light; observe moth prevention measures.
