Bourette silk is a special material that is made from natural silk. The fibers come from the cocoons of silkworms that have already been broken or damaged. These shorter pieces of fiber include the beginning and end parts of the cocoons as well as those that were damaged when the caterpillars hatched. The name bourette comes from the French: bourre = French for filling hair, flock. Bourette silk is characterized by its characteristic, rough surface, which is created by the irregular fibers. The material allows for good air exchange, which makes it comfortable to wear. Bourette silk can also absorb moisture and thus helps to keep the body dry. Bourette silk is often used to make ecologically oriented women’s fashion such as shirts, dresses and nightwear. Due to its rough texture, bourette silk should be cared for carefully, ideally by hand washing or on a gentle cycle with cold water. The history of silk production began around 5,000 years ago in China. However, bourette silk itself only became known in Europe later, as silk production and processing evolved and techniques for using damaged or broken cocoons were introduced. The exact time when bourette silk was introduced to Europe is difficult to determine, but it is likely that it gained importance over the centuries as silk production became more widespread in Europe. An interesting aspect of bourette silk is the silk glue (sericin), a protein that holds the cocoons together. Unlike other types of silk, bourette silk largely retains its silk glue, giving it its characteristic rough texture and a fine, natural scent. Bourette silk is particularly good for people with sensitive skin, as it has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties due to the high silk glue content. Bourette silk was not used in the Middle Ages, as the necessary spinning techniques were not developed until the 19th century. In the Middle Ages, silk production focused on reeled silk made of long, unbroken threads. Although bourette silk is not suitable for reenactment before the 19th century, it can be a stopgap solution for people with sensitive skin. The decision to use it in reenactment is up to each individual. However, bourette silk is and remains a modern variant of silk and is therefore less suitable for historical clothing.
